06/30 Reading with Matt Bell and Local Authors
To celebrate Matt Bell’s “In the House upon the Dirt between the Lake and the Woods,” the fiction author will give a reading with local authors Jim Ruland, Elle Brooks, and James Meetze. Refreshments will be served.
Bell’s book is out in hardcover from Soho Press, available wherever you buy your books, including your local independent bookstore, Powell’s, Amazon, and Barnes & Noble. It’s also available in all eBook formats, including Kindle, Nook, Kobo, and iBooks.
About the novel: Leaving all they’ve known, a newly wed couple begins their life together in a deserted land. When conceiving a child proves elusive, the man and woman are gradually torn apart. The land that was meant to sustain them becomes a physical reflection of their strife: strange new objects, literally sung into being by the woman, strain the earth and sky; the man compulsively decimates their food sources; and strange beasts stalk the desperate, nameless humans. But the greatest trial in the strange world they’ve made comes from far below the house: in an endless labyrinth, forged by the woman’s grief, into which she disappears.
“Somber, incantatory sentences to hold you within [Bell’s] dreamlike creation…. This unique book leaves you with the haunting lesson that even if you renounce and cast away your loved ones, you can never disown the memory of your deeds.”
—The Wall Street Journal
“Challenging, boldly experimental.”
—Publishers Weekly“An absorbingly virtuosic near fairy tale about marital struggle and personal reclamation. The result is a novel of catastrophic beauty and staggering originality.”
