2017-07/30 Third Hour Poems – Poem-Making with Jim Moreno

Date: July 30, 2017 Time: 10am to 1pm Number of sessions: One Day Class Members: $45 Nonmembers: $54 Location: San Diego Writers, Ink, ARTS DISTRICT Liberty Station, 2730 Historic Decatur Road, Barracks 16, 2nd Floor Above Women's Museum, San Diego, CA 92106

Join City Heights poet Jim Moreno for his summer series poetry workshop at the Ink Spot writing room of San Diego Writers, Ink.  Six to eleven local poets enjoyed Moreno’s 3 month series of writing social justice poetry in April, May, & June in the personal stew of memoir as vouchsafed by Moreno’s mentor/friend, the late Steve Kowit .

The idea for Third Hour Poems came from poets who asked if Jim would put together a poetry writing workshop consisting of poetry prompts not covered in his three hour workshops.  Moreno will not let structure squeeze process due to the heightened writing/craft, awareness, and positive feedback in respectful tones from program participants in the writing circle.  All the poets in Moreno’s workshops get to read what they wrote if they choose to do so. In Jim Moreno’s experience the poem is not finished unless it is read aloud to one’s self or to an audience. This brings the ear into the writing process.  And your ear, the sound/rhythms of what one writes, are the intuitive resources, the truth in language resources, that many poets eschew.

In other words this is not a workshop for poets trying to find a reading audience.  Third Hour Poems is a workshop for poets who  trying to find their heart, trying to make sense of the current zeitgeist of our nation, trying to write poems that are, in Steve Kowit’s words, “intelligible, readable, textured, multilayered, exploratory, intuitive, and profoundly insightful…”

The last sentence can  loosely be translated by saying to the poet, “ Tell your story with detail, emotion, and clarity.” Writing from your heart is paying attention to the threads of your life that you push away in your work harness, you brush off in your busyness, running from round to round with no referee to ring the bell.

Third Hour Poems will present poetry from the likes of Li Young Lee, Nikki Giovanni, Dorianne Laux, Sharon Olds,  Pilar Rodriquez,  Quincy Troupe, Ranier Maria Rilke, Mary Oliver,  Jimmy Santiago Baca, Rumi, Hafez, and others.   Jim will create a safe writing mileau for poets in this Third Hour Poems writing workshop. You will leave with 1-3 poems that he will encourage you to submit for publishing knowing that you were true to yourself with your pen and your only audience is your amazingly intuitive heart.  Publishing allows you to see who resonates with that consciousnesses that always pleases if you will stop, breathe, sit down, and listen to its song.
