  SDW, Ink Volunteer Position
Prose & Poetry in the Park Event Manager

Love prose and poetry? Love Balboa Park? Love to organize small, informal special events on a one-time basis rather than signing up for an ongoing job? Then this is the volunteer position for you. It’s a SDWI tradition, building on nearly a decade of summer readings.

Hours per Week: This is a one-time-only event. Requires 5-8 hours planning, plus managing the event onsite (4 hours).

Days/Times: The organizing can be done anytime, anywhere, and the event takes place on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon in mid-August.

Length of Agreement: Preferably indefinitely, but minimum one year

Description:

  • Set time/date/location for event in Balboa Park (suggested location: Poetry Bench at 6th Ave. & Quince St.)
  • Recruit host/emcee for event (Jihmye Collins as host is also becoming a tradition)
  • Organize volunteers for set up/clean up/refreshments
  • Oversee event management
  • Assist in promoting event

Requirements:

  • Some experience with Open Mic Readings
  • Like working with volunteers and coordinating people/projects
  • Attention to detail
  • Love summer afternoons in Balboa Park; partial to poetry

Reporting To:

Executive Director and/or member of Programming Committee

Salary and Benefits:

No monetary compensation whatsoever. Benefits include the joys of creating community and filling the summer air with the sound of spoken word poetry and prose.
