Jihmye Collins

Jihmye Collins, dear friend and brother, died Tuesday (March 15, 2011) after a long and stoically endured illness. Our love and prayers go out to his family and the countless friends and acquaintances he touched with his wisdom and humor.

Jihmye was a founding board member of SDWI. He was a poet and award-winning artist and best known for his watercolor images and striking interpretive themes. He has 5 public art projects in the City of San Diego. Jihmye’s creations attempted to express his Baha’i belief in the Oneness of the Human family. He was a published essayist and review panelist for arts and culture throughout the state and regularly published in a wide range of anthologies. He conducted art workshops and was an accomplished public speaker. Awards include one of 25 artist recognized for their contribution to the arts at the 25th anniversary celebration of the California Arts Council in 2001; honorable mention from the 2000 San Diego Book Awards for his book of poetry Pathways: Thoughts from the Middle of the Road, and Outstanding Development Partner award, Lillian Place Public Art Project, 2007 and was recognized by the 4th District and Jacob’s Center for service and contributions in the community over time with a portrait painted on a community building. The cover artist for A Year In Ink, Vol. 1, he also illustrated several books, including a recent publication In Their Footsteps (Acta Publications, 2007). Jihmye was a founding member of the African American Writers & Artists, on the Arts Advisory Board for the City Heights Performance Annex, and a member of the Spanish Village Art Center for more than 25 years. He also served on the Arts Resource Team for the Jacobs Center for Neighborhood Innovation. He was a past member of the San Diego County Public Arts Advisory Council; Sushi Gallery’s advisory board; and a member of the Sankofa Bird/Langston Hughes Poetry Circle.
