A read and critique group should be neither a mob nor a drumming circle. It should be a bunch of individuals, with all their quirks and preferences intact, speaking their minds in a productive manner. Consensus is not the goal. Assault is not the goal. Learning what another writer is trying to accomplish and helping him or her accomplish it . . . that’s the goal. Discovering perspectives—both in yourself and in others–that will help you fulfill your own intentions as a writer . . . that’s the goal.
This group will be limited in size but not in scope or content. Whatever you’re writing, and whatever your level of experience, read and critiques are suitable for you.
Mark A. Clements has published three novels and been leading read and critique groups at the Southern California Writer’s Conference since 1989, and at the La Jolla Writer’s Conference since its inception. He believes that the best results come with a group managed with loose reins, humor, and an emphasis on the positive.
