Spark your creative writing fire in a popular, low-commitment genre that’s all the rage on the internet and more popular than ever in literary publications and anthologies. In this two-part class, we will explore the emerging genre of stories under 1,000 words. In our first session we’ll get acquainted with Flash Fiction, and through a series of exercises, try our hand at writing some. In-class and take-home exercises on word economy, evocative language and image choice can improve writing of any length. Take a week to revise, rewrite and polish your short short stories then bring them back to our second meeting, which will offer participants an opportunity for feedback on their work. Open to all experience levels.

Nicole Vollrath, MFA, earned her master’s degree in creative writing at Emerson College in Boston. She has published articles, book reviews and won several awards for her short fiction. Nicole teaches at UCSD Extension, and serves on the Board of Directors of San Diego Writers, Ink.
