Choosing & Working With an Editor
Working with an editor can be a very rewarding experience and can make a huge difference in your writing, but if you don’t know how to pick the right person for the job, it can be a waste of time and money. Jennifer will discuss the different types of editors, so you can choose what sort of editor your work may need; learn the difference between a line editor, a structural or developmental editor, and a copyeditor (not to be confused with a proofreader!). Learn how to prepare your work in order to save money, before hiring an editor, and how to work effectively with the person you have chosen. Attendees will have the opportunity to ask specific questions about their writing projects, and a handout with helpful tips will be included. Please bring a short piece of writing (story, essay or except) and be prepared to share.

Jennifer Silva Redmond is Editor-in-Chief of Sunbelt Publications, an award-winning small press, and prose editor for the San Diego Writers, Ink anthology A Year in Ink, Vol 3. Co-founding editor of the critically-acclaimed Sea of Cortez Review (1998-2001), Redmond joined Sunbelt, an independent publisher, as Acquisitions Editor in 2000, and was named Editor-in-Chief in 2004. Also an author, she has sold stories, poetry, and essays to many publications and was recently featured in Latinos in Lotusland: An Anthology of Contemporary Southern California Literature. She enjoys speaking to writers’ groups and guiding both well-known and first-time authors through the acquisition, editing, and production of their books. She is on the staff of the Southern California Writers conference.
